Suggested Readings on Prayer

These are a few of the many books and other resources which deal with the topics of prayer and spiritual growth.

Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection. The Practice of the Presence of God, John J. Delaney, trans. Garden City, NY: Image Books, 1977. A collection of the writings of a seventeenth century lay Carmelite in which the author explores the meaning of personal union with God.

Davies, I. G., ed. The New Westminster Dictionary of Liturgy and Worship. Louisville: Westminster/John Knox, 1986. This key reference book offers brief background, definition, and history on a large volume of items related to Christian worship and liturgy .

Edwards, Tilden. Sabbath Time. Nashville: The Upper Room, 1992. An excellent work on "the understanding of the sabbath as an integral dimension of the Christian life" as we maintain "the balance between our worship, play, rest, work, community, and ministry."

Holmes, Urban T. Spirituality for Ministry. San Francisco: Harper and Row, 1982. Holmes, among other things, outlines key issues in, and models of, spiritual development for persons in ministry .

Jacobs, Peg Lodwick. Friends of God and Prophets: Spiritual Exercises for Compassion and Justice. Cleveland: Office for Church in Society, 1994. Written by a member of the United Church of Christ Office for Church in Society, it concisely introduces several spiritual practices to enhance the Christian life in the church and world.

Kelly, Thomas S. A Testament of Devotion. San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1992. An excellent book by an American Quaker missionary and educator who lived his faith in the midst of day-to-day life.

Michael, Chester P., and Marie C. Norrisey. Prayer and Temperament: Different Prayer Forms for Different Personality Types. Charlottesville, Va.: Open Door, 1985. Different types of people respond favorably to different styles of prayer. This book describes various types of people using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and points to ways of praying that seem to be most effective with each type of person.

Norris, Kathleen, Quotidian Mysteries: Laundry, Liturgy and "Women 's Work" (Madeleva Lecture in Spirituality). Mahwah, N.J.: Paulist Press, 1998. This is a small book that looks at praying through normal activities.

Pennington, M. Basil, Centering Prayer: Renewing an Ancient Christian Prayer Form. New York: Image Books, 1980 Pennington introduces the history and practice of centering prayer.

Shawchuck, Norman, and Ruben P. Job. A Guide to Prayer for All God's People. Nashville: The Upper Room, 1983. This daily devotional guide is organized with scripture readings for each day, a selection of spiritual readings arranged thematically for each wee, and additional material for a monthly personal spiritual retreat.

Weavings: A Journal of the Christian Spiritual Life. Nashville: The Upper Room. A bi-monthly publication containing articles, poems, and book reviews for those interested in spiritual growth.
